Book an Engineer Breakdown and Repair BrochureTopping up your boiler
All combination boilers are a sealed and pressurised system (much like a car engine). This means from time to time it will be necessary to 'top up' the water pressure in the system, which can be needed for a number of reasons, but is a completely normal function of your boiler.
You will only need to top up your boiler if it is telling you to do so, which will be indicated on the digital display with either text or a fault code ('F22', for example, on a Vaillant boiler).
Please do not 'chase' pressure and ONLY top up the boiler if it requires you to do so.
Pressure is dynamic and will change with the temperature of the boiler. It is quite normal for the pressure to increase when the heating is active and fall again once it is switched off.
It may be necessary to top up the boiler 3-4 times within the first month after installation as the system settles, however, if after that it is needed more than 3-4 times a year, please give us a call as this may need investigation.
Please do not top up the boiler if there is a leak anywhere on the heating system.
To help us ensure a long, trouble free life for your new boiler, and to help your engineer get a picture of boiler performance, we ask you record each time you top up the boiler.
How to top up your boiler
Locate the pressure gauge. This will be either a dial or on the digital display.
Locate the filling loop. In most modern boilers this is integral and located under the boiler on the right hand side. It is a silver braided loop. On some boilers it is separate, but will still be a silver braided flexible pipe.
At each end of the filling loop you will find a valve with a plastic black or blue control tap (some loops will only have one). Turn these on, they only turn one way and the order you turn them on doesn't matter.
Once turned on, you will hear the water flowing into the boiler and will notice the pressure increasing on the gauge. Leave these on until the pressure reads 1.0 bar or just above. Do not worry if you go above this as the system will settle in normal operation.
Turn off the control taps to complete this procedure.
